Dear Margaret,
Two West Australians & a Woman (only paper ones, alas!) arrived this morning. The papers come very regularly now and I do enjoy looking at them. From the long lists of Sits. Vac. I think I shall be able to get a job all right. Was interested in the job, or rather the rate, for a railway porter "17/6 per day for first year… plus district allowance … liberal sick leave permission…", leave three weeks after 12 months service. Our adult Grade 2 Porters start at 85/- per week of 48 hrs (this includes War Bonus of 28/-) do not get any pay when off sick, & only this year have been granted two weeks annual leave with pay. When I started on the railway in 1936 a porters' weekly wage was 40/- per week. Don't ask me how they kept home & families! But I mustn't talk shop.
There is a nasty little doubt in my mind regarding the acknowledgement & thanks for that very lovely "birthday" gift. Surely I thanks you before! Anyway, I was delighted with it and the dress is half made. The pattern is something
